Currently, the full benefits of STEP product sharing can only be realised by large enterprises with the wherewithal to manage STEP’s high cost of implementation. Now, STEP Tools will change all that with a suite of Internet tools that will allow product information to be shared across the supply chain.
The company is calling the development SESAME: A STEP Entry System for Small and Medium Suppliers. The objective will be to bridge the technology gap that currently separates the tiers of an industrial supply chain.
The SESAME tools set will demonstrate that a selection of Internet protocols and technologies can be used as a new implementation method for the STEP standard. It will use HTML and HTTP for navigation, as well as the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol will be used as a means to publish a product structure on the Internet.
Designers can watch a prototype of SESAMEgrow on the Web at www.steptools.com.
