AK Industries (AKI) has mass-manufactured an ATP bioluminescence trace detector for 3M Health Care of Loughborough.

ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is the basic energy currency molecule of all types of living organisms and, as such, is present in all micro-organisms, plant and animal cells.

The bioluminescence test for ATP shows at once the effectiveness of hygiene, disinfection and sterilisation procedures, since it instantly measures the ATP emitted by micro-organisms (such as salmonella, listeria and E coli) and by product residues.

Accordingly, 3M Health Care finds a host of applications for this technology in hygiene, environmental and quality control monitoring throughout healthcare, food testing, production and preparation, and environmental and industrial processes.

The trace detector is a tapered cuvette, 4.5cm long, with two steps reducing the diameter and made from clear polypropylene, with a moulded-on, circular, thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) seal.
