ABB’s fast-track modular packaged substation service has been called in by Total Lindsey Oil Refinery (LOR) to provide an 11kV substation for a programme to upgrade the power-distribution infrastructure at the site in North Lincolnshire.

ABB will design, manufacture, deliver and commission a complete containerised substation based on its compact Unigear ZS1 medium-voltage (MV) switchgear.

As part of its long-term replacement programme for its existing 11 kV and 3.3 kV switchgear, LOR required a fast-track solution for the replacement of the 1A/2B 11 kV substation so that the work could be completed within a tight time schedule.

ABB delivered a containerised substation in a blast-rated enclosure, requiring only limited foundations and delivered ready to ‘plug and play’.

Key benefits of product application

  • Compact design of the switchgear has enabled it to be configured as two front facing rows
  • Substation will fit within a single standard 6m container, making it easy to handle for transportation by road and positioning on site
  • Containerised substation will use ABB’s REA arc-flash protection system that combines light-sensitive sensor technology with instantaneous fault detection, solid-state trip outputs and a fast total system operating time
  • Relion IEDs provide a future-proof relay solution for demanding functional requirements, including generator protection, feeder protection, transformer protection and line differential protection
  • Units suited for retrofit installations, where they can utilise existing copper pilot cables via a modem link
  • RTU560 remote terminal unit meets all of LOR’s local HMI requirements by enabling the new substation to be integrated within the previously localised 11kV site network, providing remote access and control
