Air Control Industries (ACI) has supplied special blower units to Doncaster-based Vac-Ex for its mobile vacuum excavators.

Vac-Ex designs and builds mobile vacuum excavators that are said to provide fast and efficient excavation without the risk of damaging buried utility services, such as pipes and cables.

Employing a high-pressure air and a vacuum system, operators of Vac-Ex’s Mod-Ex 5000C lorry-mounted excavator are able to excavate and remove hole/trench material in less time than is normally required.

The excavation is left clean for easy access to any utility that might need servicing.

The excavation is performed using an air lance that delivers 180cfm of air at pressures up to 100psi/8bar from an onboard Compair compressor.

Once the earth has been loosened, it is sucked up (wet or dry) via a 125mm/180mm hose and fed into an integral 1.2m3 skip using a vacuum system.

The high-pressure vacuum required to lift the excavated soil is provided by two pairs of special blower units, which have been supplied by ACI.

The blower heads are normally used in ACI’s EP10 blower and driven by an electric motor (7.5kW, 11kW or 15kW).

For this application, however, each pair of blowers is belt driven by a dedicated 50hp Lombardini diesel engine.

As there are two separate vacuum units, the level of vacuum can be reduced for light duties, which is more energy efficient than some alternative systems that employ single drive units.

It also allows work to continue if one power unit goes down.

Much of the Mod-Ex 5000C’s overall enhanced reliability results from the fact that ACI’s blower impeller shafts are mounted on a two-bearing assembly, whereas the previous unit only employed a single bearing.

ACI’s dual-bearing configuration serves to reduce stress, which enhances durability and reliability, thereby minimising the risk of downtime and ensuring greater operating efficiency, according to the company.

William Bell, technical director of Vac-Ex, said: ’ACI has been flexible by providing us with just the blower heads, which has avoided the need to provide an electrical power supply.

’The blowers are ideal for our needs and help to keep the Mod-Ex 5000C compact and easy to maintain,’ he added.

Air Control Industries

Air Control Industries (ACI) is a leading global provider of industrial air movement products.

We analyse the application and select or design the product with the right materials, performance and environmental characteristics to provide the most efficient and cost-effective solution.

ACI has the expertise to help satisfy all your air handling requirements, be it cooling drying or spreading.

Since 1969, ACI has been designing and manufacturing fans and blowers, both for general applications and for specific tasks that demand custom-engineered solutions. We have also been developing value-added products employing our fans and blowers.

These include Airknives, bottle/can-drying systems for the drinks industry and our extruded product/cable/wire drying unit. All are employed around the world by leading international companies.

Another ACI innovation for the health and hygiene market is our Jetblack personnel cleaning stations. Being blower powered, Jetblack provides a safe and economic method of de-dusting personnel. To extend options for our customers, we also offer EBM-Papst products, for which we are the exclusive distributor.

ACI has around 50 employees split between its UK headquarters in Chard, Somerset, and its US subsidiary in Maine, New England. There is a network of overseas distributors to provide international sales and support.
