Tesa is offering a range of double-sided tapes that are said to be clean, light and strong, to equally distribute stress across a bond area and to offer high resistance to temperatures and different weather conditions.

According to the company, the key characteristics of the range — which includes Tesa ACXplus, Tesa 4970, Tesa 7070 ACXplus and Tesa 54994 — are its bonding power, stress dissipation and temperature and weather resistance. However, the tape also offers clear full-surface bonding, extreme load capacity, corrosion prevention, sealing against liquids and good aesthetic results.

Thanks to its viscoelasticity, the tape offers strength and stress dissipation, and elastic restoring forces provide inner strength while the viscous part of the material relaxes mechanical stresses. Both features are combined to maximum effect within a special acrylic system, which enables optimal wetting by chemically adapting to whatever surface it is used on.

When joining two materials with different thermal elongations, for example glass and aluminium, Tesa ACXplus delivers an optimal high-strength bond even where extreme temperatures or high winds are encountered. This makes it suitable for long-term outdoor applications, for bonding parts where the compensation of tensions is required.

It is also effective in fastening stiffeners transparently to metal panels or doors in manufacturing applications, where its viscoelasticity compensates for thermal elongation factors and its acrylate foundation handles high processing temperatures.

Key application examples

IAC Acoustics

  • IAC Acoustics, a supplier of engineered noise control products, assessed Tesa ACXplus as a possible alternative to spot welding stiffeners onto its metal components.
  • Extensive testing saw mock panels/doors and stiffeners of varying lengths, widths and thickness bonded with Tesa ACXplus and heat cured at ‘actual’ temperatures as high as 500°C.
  • Bonding was found to be effective, capable of providing excellent heat resistance, while the steps involved in production were minimised and potentially significant time savings recognised.
  • With multiple units in production each week, IAC Acoustics has now switched to using Tesa ACXplus and benefits from time savings amounting to more than 50 hours a month.

Automotive industry

  • The automotive industry is under pressure in the areas of fuel consumption, cost and power-to-weight ratios: adhesive tapes are playing an increasing role in achieving this goal.
  • Tesa’s range of double-sided tapes for mounting exterior parts is claimed to offer outstanding resilience to external factors such as moisture, UV radiation and temperature fluctuations.
  • Double-sided tapes can provide secure bonding on the diverse substrates often used in interiors, while ensuring noise damping — an essential element in guaranteeing customer satisfaction, product differentiation and the elimination of re-working costs.

Wind-blade manufacturing

  • Because they can support the efficiency of the whole production process by offering easy and clean handling, tapes are becoming prevalent in many areas of wind-blade manufacturing.
  • Resin infusion profiles used to speed up the resin infusion moulding (RIM) preparation process can be securely fastened and fixed into the resin distribution net using Tesa 4970. This acrylic tape offers better wetting on uneven net structures and prevents the contamination of blade structure often associated with using natural rubber adhesives.
  • For the constructive bonding of vortex generators, Tesa 7070 ACXplus is proven in outdoor applications to overcome stress from thermal influence. In comparison with liquid adhesives, considerations regarding pot life are removed and processing times are faster.
  • Blade leading edges can be permanently protected with Tesa 54994. This tape extends the performance of the gel coat on the part of the blade under most stress. Approved by some major OEMs and tier-one suppliers, it does not stain, lift or dry out.
