Anton Paar has developed an alcohol meter that measures distillates in all strengths with an accuracy of 0.1 per cent v/v. According to the company, the portable Snap 50 is so easy to operate that quality checks directly on site and outside the laboratory are accomplished in next to no time — independently of the ambient temperature.

Snap 50 speeds up and simplifies the watering-down and checking procedure in all distilleries and is suitable for small distilleries and also industrial producers.

Snap 50 checks the alcohol content in two-component mixtures of water and ethanol throughout the whole production process: from pure distillates, samples taken during watering down to drinkable-strength or ready-to-drink spirits. It provides the user with the required results only a few seconds after immersing the measuring tube in the distillate.

Sample temperatures from 0°C to 40°C are measured by Snap 50 and the alcohol content is automatically calculated and displayed for the required reference temperature of 20°C (or 60°F).

Measurement is quick because the sample is measured directly out of the storage tank or cask and does not have to be transferred to a measuring glass first. Additionally, users don’t have to wait long for the sample temperature to stabilise because the metal tube with the measuring cell remains in the distillate during the measurement.

Key features and benefits

  • Snap 50 measures distillates in all strengths with an accuracy of 0.1 per cent v/v
  • Quality checks can be carried out independently of the ambient temperature
  • The meter is easy to carry, light and robust
  • It speeds up and simplifies the whole watering-down and checking procedure
  • It makes it possible to measure distillates in all strengths with the same instrument
  • Snap 50 measures sample temperatures from 0°C to 40°C
  • Results are shown on a digital display
  • The meter measures density using oscillating U-tube principle
