Arc Energy Resources, a specialist in weld overlay cladding and fabrication, has completed the coating of three large quench valves for a major offshore oil and gas installation.

The directional quench valves, which weigh approximately three tonnes, were delivered to Arc Energy’s facility in Gloucestershire as pre-machined body castings.

In order to combat the combined erosion and corrosion attach from an aggressive medium, Arc Energy’s engineering team advised a 3mm-thick coating of Ultimet, a cobalt-chromium alloy that combines good corrosion, wear and impact resistance with high tensile strength.

  • Arc Energy was able to provide the precise setup and control required to coat the complex internal geometry of the valves’ cast surfaces; some surfaces were not directly visible and did not provide good accessibility.
  • Cold-wire TIG was selected because of the need for control of a welding head moving in three axes and in a variety of welding positions; this ensured that the inner surfaces of the ball valve received a consistent, high-quality layer of weld deposit.
  • After cladding, all surfaces were successfully tested to confirm the surface integrity and checked for thickness of deposit.

Arc Energy has recently invested £500,000 in two new rotating-head welding machines to increase productivity and extend the size and scope of work the company can handle. While conventional workstations move components around a fixed welding torch, the new machines use automated controls to manipulate the welding torch around a fixed component, accurately positioning it to apply the overlay while working close to the component’s footprint. The investment expands and enhances Arc Energy’s ability to handle complicated component geometries for the full or partial cladding and fabrication of a huge range of component sizes weighing anywhere up to 15 tonnes.
