US start-up Skycatch is already using specially designed drones in several top-secret, high-profile construction projects. The drones give a bird’s eye view of the site, and deliver immediate progress reports. This in turn speeds up logistics, and efficiently identifies changes that need to be made.

The possibilities don’t end there; Japanese construction machinery giant Komatsu have begun using drones to plot the course of unmanned bulldozers.

The research and development behind these technological solutions has been progressing since 2007. However, the implementation of the technology has progressed at a slower pace. Prof Simon Austin is the leading researcher at the School of Civil and Building Engineering at Loughborough University. He has led a team of researchers to develop a 3D concrete printer, and puts the construction industry’s hesitance down to its tendency to be risk-averse.
