ATI Stellram has announced a multi-purpose, ceramic, cloth-based flap disc for aggressive metal finishing applications as well as other applications across the manufacturing sector.

The Ceramiq disc range is designed to increase cutting productivity by up to 22 per cent and offer a prolonged usable life.

Other applications for the disc range from removing weld sputter and cleaning joints to grinding profiles on difficult-to-machine materials such as high alloy steels and titanium.

And being suited to both heavy grinding and finishing in one operation, Ceramiq discs offer optimum surface finish by avoiding scoring, marking and ‘blueing’ of the work piece.

At the core of Ceramiq flap disc is its design and assembly called ‘semi-jumbo construction’.

This creates a robust sandwich of overlapping ceramic sheets that are much narrower (20mm) than on conventional flap discs.

The result is a concentrated cutting zone with all the cloth usable, eliminating waste on discarded discs.

When using conventional flap discs, uneven cutting wear results in discs containing unused cutting material being thrown away – an unnecessary cost.

During the cutting operation the resin bonded flaps are both self-cleaning and self-sharpening, thereby enhancing cutting productivity.

In tests over a 55-minute duration, 22 per cent more stock than a conventional zirconium disc and 14 per cent more than a competitive ceramic disc was removed, according to ATI.

The Ceramiq disc also lasted longer, remaining fully usable for a continuous 70-minute cutting period.

When operating Ceramiq flap discs, the thickness of the flap ‘sandwich’ produces a cushioned effect that transmits much less vibration through the angle grinder and to the operator.

As the ceramic grit is lubricant coated, Ceramiq discs are also quieter in use than conventional designs.

Garryson Ceramiq flap discs are available in: 115, 125 and 180mm diameters and 36, 40, 60 and 80 grits.
