ATI Stellram has introduced a versatile turning geometry for the finish turning of components manufactured from steel and difficult-to-machine materials, such as high-temperature alloys.

The Stellram 1B insert is available in a choice of hardwearing grades consisting of SP0819, which is designed for high cutting speeds on difficult-to-machine materials, and Nitro-Lok-coated NL37, designed for high cutting speeds in unalloyed and alloyed steels.

These grade and coating technologies combined with this geometry are designed to boost productivity and improve component integrity, according to the company.

The 1B geometry features a precisely controlled cutting edge and nose profile, designed so that the material can be removed cleanly and efficiently, leaving a good surface finish at varying depths of cut and feed rates.

ATI Stellram claims that the 1B geometry has been designed in combination with proven grades and coatings to provide high resistance to heat and edge breakdown, resulting in little to no loss in tool life while still increasing productivity.

The company has also produced a dedicated product brochure, which includes the complementary medium to roughing 4E geometry for difficult-to-machine materials.

The brochure provides a range of information, including cutting data and chip control charts.

The 1B geometry is the latest in a series of new products from ATI Stellram, which also includes the 48 milling geometry.

ATI Stellram develops and produces high-performance cutting tools for difficult-to-machine materials used in a wide variety of industries including aerospace, power generation, medical, oil and gas production as well as automotive.

Its extensive product range comprises inserts and toolholders suitable for applications in drilling, grooving, milling, threading and turning. In addition ATI Stellram develops new grades and specialist combinations of substrates and coatings. Renowned for solving hard machining challenges, ATI Stellram has also established a reputation for developing innovative solutions designed to deliver better productivity, lower costs and higher quality, especially for the new generation of materials like nickel-, cobalt- and titanium-based alloys. ATI Stellram is a business unit of ATI Engineered Products and part of the ATI Aerospace team, a group of global businesses that produce a wide range of specialty metals and cutting tool solutions.

It has manufacturing facilities in the UK, Switzerland and the United States, and 9 sales offices around the world. ATI Stellram’s tooling engineers and metallurgists work closely with other specialists within the group to develop smarter solutions for difficult-to-machine materials.

This seamless technology transfer between the ATI companies provides an extensive knowledge base, not only of specialty metals, but also cutting tool performance.
