Autodesk Inventor software acts as the foundation of the Autodesk solution for Digital Prototyping, enabling 3D mechanical design, simulation, tooling creation and design communication.

The Inventor model is an accurate 3D digital prototype that enables users to validate the form, fit and function of a design as they work, minimising the need to test the products with physical prototypes.

By allowing customers to use a digital prototype to design, visualise and simulate their products digitally, Inventor supports more effective communication, reduces errors in the design process and delivers product designs more quickly.

Inventor 2011 adds new direct manipulation capabilities but retains the traditional parametric functionality of earlier versions.

By offering both modelling paradigms – parametric and direct – the software delivers flexibility, giving users the freedom to choose the best method for the task at hand.

The additional direct manipulation capabilities in Inventor 2011 software improve the mechanical design process, helping to accelerate design times compared with Inventor 2010 software by approximately 40 per cent on common tasks such as editing an existing design.

Direct modelling has particular benefits for users when they are reading in data from other CAD systems.

Inventor can read STEP and IGES, but also Catia, Solidworks and Pro/E CAD models.

Inventor 2011 software also incorporates Autodesk’s design visualisation capabilities within the CAD application, so users can better conceptualise and communicate designs with clients.

New shading, lighting and material properties give users a photo-realistic representation of their designs in real time.

With the newly added finite element analysis capability for steel frame structures, users can test responses of frame structures to gravity and other loads, and record animations of displacement and stress results.

The software guides users through the steps required to define the analysis, making simulation more accessible to CAD users.

There have also been advancements in mould design for plastics.

Inventor Tooling 2011 improves performance for a number of key operations by more than 50 per cent, supports dynamic simulation of mould assemblies and helps users to automatically generate the mould core and cavity for a broader range of plastic parts, whether using native Inventor or imported files.

Other key enhancements come in the area of design automation.

Inventor iLogic technology is now fully integrated into Inventor 2011, simplifying rules-based design.

The iCopy feature enables customisation of commonly used assemblies by automating the process of copying and positioning similar components.

The Inventor 2011 release also incorporates enhancements in freeform shape modelling.

Autodesk Alias Design for Inventor 2011 is a new product that integrates industrial design capabilities in the Inventor parametric modelling environment.
