Master Chemical’s Trim E950 metalworking fluid has enabled a Norwegian automotive manufacturer to save costs and improve productivity, as well as solve the issue of poor tool life.

The manufacturer required a fluid that not only provided the performance needed for cost-effective drilling and tapping parts made from air-hardened V-2904 steel with a hardness value of 330 Brinell, but that also complied with regulation prohibiting the use of chlorinated extreme pressure additives that are commonly used to decrease cutting forces.

Trim E950 is a proprietary blend of Master Chemical’s vegetable-based technology and non-chlorinated and non-sulphurised extreme pressure additives.

During trials, the fluid allowed the manufacturer to increase the number of holes drilling and tapped before tool change from 1,800 to 3,000.

Benefits of product application

  • Additives control built-up edge in tough operations
  • Mild contact nature is operator friendly
  • Superior lubricity provides good surface finish and tool life
  • Low foaming quality was a benefit in Norway’s soft water conditions
  • Estimated tool savings during the trials were 40 per cent
  • Total time savings represented €400 (£323) per week
  • Tool breakage decreased from five per week to zero, boosting savings by another €625 per week
  • More machines and applications are now being switched to Trim E950

The Coolant Management Company

Master Chemical develops and markets a comprehensive metalworking fluid
programme.  Its products are cutting and grinding fluids, cutting oils,
washing and cleaning compounds and rust preventatives.  They are all
marketed under the brand name, TRIM.

Since 1990 Master Chemical Europe has provided a dedicated sales and
manufacturing service for Europe.  In that time it has also become the
centre of excellence for product development to meet the specific production
needs of European manufacturers.

Its research has led to the introduction of a range of water- and vegetable
ester based formulations that are non-hazardous yet offer superb production
performance.

The need for this type of metalworking fluid is driven by EU regulation and
as a result Master Chemical Europe is now the leading manufacturer of
application-specific metalworking fluids.

When used in conjunction with Master Chemical’s trademark coolant management
strategies, these products provide optimum productivity and significant
operating cost reduction.

To provide greater capacity for this work the company recently moved to new
premises that include a laboratory that is three times bigger than its
forerunner.

Master Chemical Europe is now responsible for supporting an ever-expanding
distributor network, extending from Portugal in the south to Russia and
Scandinavia in the north and east.
