Secomak, an industrial-drying specialist, has received an innovation award for creating an energy-saving invention for drying containers.

Secomak, based in Elstree, Hertfordshire, was rewarded for the invention at the 2009 Lord Stafford Awards on 31 March.

The awards seek to encourage closer working links between universities and businesses.

Secomak joined up with the University of Hertfordshire’s School of Aerospace, Automotive and Design Engineering in Hatfield to devise a better Powerstrip system for drying bottles, cans, jars, fruit and vegetables.

The Powerstrip machine is equipped with sensors that can detect when a product needs to be dried but that switches itself off, sometimes for just a few seconds, when it is not needed.

Lord Stafford, patron of the awards and chair of the judges, said: ‘Here we have a company, already a major player in the industrial-drying market, which has benefited from working with its local university for some years and has now made a major breakthrough that could reduce energy consumption in the drying process by 60 per cent.’
