An ESAB CAB 300M column and boom with an A6 Arcmaster welding head is allowing Babcock Integrated Technology to achieve an effective and economical welding process.

Babcock provides solutions for the defence industry and is a long-term user of ESAB equipment.

The new equipment, which also includes an LAF 1000 welding rectifier unit, an FFRS 1200 flux feed and recovery system and a JS200 flux storage hopper, complements an existing A2 Multitrac with an LAF 1000 welding rectifier unit.

The additional equipment extends Babcock’s submerged arc welding capacity, enabling under-boom heights of 3,750mm with a boom extension up to 5,580mm.

The new equipment was purchased initially for a contract with the Spanish Navy, where the company has a significant number of butt welds on high-strength quenched and tempered material; as a result of the increased automation that the equipment offers, the risks of reworking these critical areas will be kept to a minimum.

The components, manufactured from quenched and tempered high-strength naval steel (Q1N) in thicknesses of 40mm to 75mm, would normally be forgings but, with the constraints of lean manufacturing and a short lead programme, the company opted to fabricate and weld components that meet design parameters and cost constraints.

The versatility and efficiency of the new equipment enables these fabricated components to be welded to precise design parameters with a dimensional accuracy of +/-2.0mm, maintained during forming and welding.

The contract requirement of 20 four-slide valve assemblies is progressing well at this stage, with the new equipment fulfilling initial expectations in weld quality and ease of operation.

As part of ESAB, a world leading supplier of welding and cutting solutions, ESAB Group (UK) Ltd have access to a product research and development programme, the envy of the welding industry.

The brand is synonymous with world leading expertise  and today the company produces consumables and equipment for virtually every welding and cutting process and application.

As a logical step following his invention of the covered welding electrode back in 1904, Oscar Kjellberg founded ESAB. Since then, the company has constantly improved on existing methods and materials. At the same time, ESAB has developed new methods to meet the challenge presented by technological progress.

More than 100 years of continuous research, development and manufacture have made ESAB a world leader in welding, cutting and also an international supplier of products, know-how and services that none can match.

At is UK headquarters, ESAB Group (UK) Ltd have a team of highly experienced and qualified staff who are always available to offer help and advice on all aspects of welding and cutting.
