Automated Packaging Systems’ Autobag AB 180 is a bagger designed to protect and improve pack quality while improving efficiency and cutting bagging costs.

Automated Packaging Systems reports that customers who put AB 180 to the test confirmed that it reduces wastage and downtime and, as a result, increases productivity.

DEM Manufacturing bags around three million units every year in its Connector Parts division.

The company, which produces electrical components, electromagnetic solutions and connector products, moved into a custom-built 4,000m2 building and invested in six new packaging machines.

Despite the investment, however, it had problems with its bagging operation from the outset, experiencing excessively high downtime and extraordinary volumes of wastage.

Lynsay Brighton, cell leader at DEM said: ‘Those original machines were problematical from the start.

‘We had at least one machine down every day and averaged about 150 hours of downtime each month.

‘So in 2009 DEM Manufacturing called time on its six packaging machines, switched manufacturer and purchased a single Autobag AB 180 from Automated Packaging Systems instead.

‘The Autobag AB 180 enabled us to cut bagging downtime by 80 per cent and reduced waste from bag loss at changeover to less than one per cent,’ she added.

DEM used Automated Packaging Systems’ free consultancy and advice on offer, which helped link operations and finance to evaluate the benefits to the business.

‘A key part of the pre-purchase decision-making process was the cost of the machine and how quickly these could be recouped,’ said Brighton.

‘We could demonstrate that we would be able to pay back the initial outlay in less than a year.

‘One of the principal justifications for this fast return was the ability for the AB 180 to make a labour-saving equivalent to two people.

‘Initially we had planned on purchasing two machines, but AB 180’s speed and efficiency means we’re managing with one,’ she added.

Much of the DEM output is low value and high volume and the length of run varies; some are very short and others long.

AB 180 makes accurate and efficient product and label changes possible, which is an essential requirement where bagging needs changing regularly.

The bagger averages 30 hours downtime per month including printer ribbon changes and bag change over.

Less than 1 per cent of bags is lost to waste.

The DEM AB 180 has a PI412c imprinter that produces clear results at speed.
