At Electronica 2010, Saft is launching the latest additions to its range of primary lithium batteries in the form of two D-size cells designed for high-drain electronic applications.

The new-generation LSH20 cell offers high performance to ensure enhanced autonomy and long service life for metering and military radio communications equipment.

The Friwo brand M20Ex intrinsically safe cells, said to be the world’s only high-power lithium cells to be rated T4 at 70C, are designed for use in potentially explosive atmospheres, such as in smart gas meters with GPRS communication.

Saft LSH20 lithium-thionyl chloride (Li-SOCl2) cylindrical D-size cells have a nominal voltage of 3.6V and are also suited for security alarm systems, tracking systems and M2M applications.

The new-generation LSH20 cell offers nominal capacity of 15Ah at 20C – under a 15mA discharge to a 2V cut-off – as well as pulse capability of up to 3A.

The cell features a spiral electrode construction designed for high-pulse applications.

It is an industrial design, with a stainless-steel container, glass-to-metal seal, laser welding and safety vent for long shelf life.

It can be used over a -60 to 85C temperature range and offers a high level of resistance to corrosion and safety under abusive conditions.

The new-generation LSH20 has a low self-discharge rate – less than three per cent per year of storage at 20C – and features the same interfaces as previous models.

Saft’s Friwo brand M20Ex lithium manganese dioxide (Li-MnO2) cell has been developed to offer a high level of performance for an intrinsically safe D-size cell intended for industrial applications requiring high power under potentially explosive applications.

This includes smart gas meters with built-in GPRS communications, gas tank level monitors, leak detectors, petrochemical facilities and mining applications.

The Friwo M20Ex cell has been designed in compliance with the IEC 60079-11 standard and has a T4 rating at 70C, a nominal capacity of 12.4Ah – at 20C, under a 150mA discharge – and a pulse capability up to 8A.

It also offers a self-discharge rate of less than one per cent per year of storage at 20C and the capability to operate over a -40 to 70C temperature range.

The Friwo M20Ex cell is based on a spiral electrode construction for high-pulse applications and has an industrial design housed in a stainless-steel container, with glass to metal seal, laser welding and safety vent for long shelf life.

It is designed to offer a high level of resistance to corrosion and safety under abusive conditions.
