YSSR series data sheet - .PDF file.

An ‘overlap’-type Smalley wave spring from TFC has been used in a critical aerospace bayonet connector application to provide a consistent force at its working height after the male and female components are rotated together into final assembly.

A Smalley spring was designed to replace a die-stamped wave spring that continuously provided inconsistent loading and was prone to binding in the assembly as it was compressed.

Since Smalley wave springs are produced from a continuous coil of single-filament, pre-tempered, round-edge flat wire, it is possible to create a spring from a much narrower material wall section and provide greater increased radial clearance as a result. The overlap end configuration allows the material to be displaced as it is compressed, therefore removing the possibility of binding in the assembly.

The Smalley wave spring, unlike a die-stamped equivalent, does not require heat treatment after forming and, as a consequence, the spring rate is consistently more accurate and repeatable across all manufactured batches.
