Control-valve manufacturer Bifold is using Shapespace 3D search technology to search its entire part reference library and identify all parts manufactured from the same raw material, enabling it to consolidate manufacturing processes and improve efficiencies.

The technology, provided by Processflows, searches part libraries and databases for all items of similar 3D shape or size without the need for part name and number.

All parts matching the 3D search criteria are presented collectively on screen in a layered, 3D visual format for easy identification, along with part number and full documented specification.

Key benefits of product application

  • Information includes the steel-bar sizing used to manufacture the part
  • Each part number can be verified against the correct steel bar needed to manufacture that part
  • Parts made from the same steel bar are grouped together
  • Bifold has been able to consolidate its part manufacture
  • Reduction in time spent changing between jobs and reconfiguring machinery
  • Bifold now maintains a constant level of physical stock parts, including ‘one-off’ parts and infrequently used parts

ShapeSpace 3D search technology helps enterprises to quickly find CAD files held in Product Data Management (PDM) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems, improving efficiency and productivity.

By using the common denominator of shape, duplicate or near-duplicate, parts can be quantified, irrespective of the CAD system. This avoids naming convention issues, and regional variances that inhibit and frustrate searches.

Using ShapeSpace software PLM managers and design managers are able to rationalise existing parts libraries by de-duplicating or data cleansing the file vault/s and achieve process efficiences and cost benefits. 3D files can be categorised and managed more efficiently.
