Bosch Rexroth is providing Finning with back-up generator drive equipment, including the implement pump for the dozer blade and two bespoke valves for additional hydraulically driven back-up generators to a polar expedition led by Sir Ranulph Fiennes that will attempt to cross the Antarctic during the polar winter using two Caterpillar bulldozers.

Finning — Caterpillar’s UK distributor — contacted Bosch Rexroth as it needed to provide a robust back-up heat-generating system for the specially engineered caboose living quarters. Due to the immovable departure deadline for the Coldest Journey project, the production of the valves needed to be turned around within days of the order.

Bosch Rexroth provided detailed component drawings, which allowed the customisation team to accurately assess the optimum position to mount the valves and hose routings before the parts arrived.

Finning then requested drive motor and flow control valves to drive the generators at a constant 1,500rev/min at any engine speed.

Key benefits of product application

  • Bosch Rexroth was able to meet the tight deadline
  • Detailed component drawings helped save time when assessing product positioning
  • The equipment and components that will be used on the journey will ensure the team can heat their shelters in extreme temperatures that could reach -90°C
