CV Instruments, the testing arm of the Bowers Metrology Group, has announced the launch of its MET-U1A portable hardness tester for a wide range of materials, including metals, plastics and ceramics.

The unit differs from traditional hardness testers that usually measure the size of indentations on test samples with a microscope.

Using a precise diamond indenter equipped with a vibrating rod to press on the test surface, under a fixed load, the MET-U1A measures hardness by applying ultrasonic vibrations and analysing the resulting damping effect.

This modern hardness testing technique is said to be accurate and reproducible, while leaving almost no visible indents on the tested article’s surface.

The portable nature of the unit makes it suitable for both workshop and on-site measurement routines.

The MET-U1A can also be utilised in the maintenance of large-scale structures, vehicles, ships, steel towers, bridges and aircraft.

Providing hardness reading in Rockwell (HRC), Brinell (HB), Vickers (HV) and Shore (HSD) scales, demonstrations of this portable hardness tester can be arranged through Bowers Metrology UK.
