Held on 18 September 2014 at the National Space Centre in Leicester, CGTech’s latest VERICUT Users Exchange (VUE) event attracted nearly 100 people from more than 40 of the UK’s technology manufacturing companies. CGTech used the event to provide customers with a feature review of the latest release of VERICUT, V7.3, its independent CNC machine tool simulation and optimisation software.

CGTech managing director John Reed welcomed everyone to the event with an overview of the manufacturing industry sectors supported by VERICUT across the globe, including aerospace, automotive and motorsport, medical, power generation, oil and gas and consumer products. The company’s tech team, meanwhile, provided a feature review of VERICUT 7.3, with demonstrations of the benefits, and covered the licence-free availability of Reviewer files on Windows tablets and the Apple iPad.

CGTech’s UK sales manager, Rob Lightfoot, presented the benefits of simulating parts probing in VERICUT. He explained that simulation can reduce probing program prove-out time and prevent damage to the machine or the probe. Typical probing applications include component confirmation and identification, intelligent NC program selection, machine capability check and path optimisation, adaptive machining techniques and SPC data collection.

Sources for tooling data were also considered, with rapid development currently taking place on Sandvik’s Adveon and Machining Cloud’s systems from Kennametal (Novo) and others. A productivity workshop rounded off the day featuring a host of shortcuts and techniques to improving the productivity of VERICUT users.

Key features and benefits of VERICUT 7.3

  • VERICUT is able to represent the material removal process exactly as it will occur on the machine tool in the real world. VERICUT Tool Manager has been developed to make this important part of the process easier for the user. At VUE, the simulation of a back-facing tool was shown as a demonstration of the advanced cutting tooling technology supported by VERICUT.
  • New VERICUT Force modules will be available with version 7.4, which will be released in 2015. Reed said: ‘Because the software uses actual data for cutting tool forces and spindle power readings to calculate maximum chip thickness and feed rate, it offers a number of technical benefits. With the material properties of the component and the cutting conditions also considered, VERICUT Force will provide significant benefits when applied to any precision machining operation applied to challenging materials, including titanium, high-nickel super-alloys such as Hastelloy, Inconel and Waspaloy, duplex and stainless steel and any work-hardening materials.’
