Chem Resist has won a contract from a local power generator to replace a GRP tank that stores 36 per cent w/w hydrochloric acid (HCl).

The tank, which holds a three-year supply of HCl, has a leaking flange.

Prior to de-commissioning the GRP tank, Chem Resist will drain and transfer the acid to a temporary storage facility.

The GRP tank will then be washed out, disconnected from services and removed to a landfill site for disposal.

Chem Resist will supply one of its spiral wound polyethylene PE-100 tanks, designed to BSI 12573-2000.

Spiral winding supplies strong thermoplastic tank barrels, with a safety factor of 1.

According to the standard, sheet-fabricated tanks only have a safety factor of 0.8 or 0.6, depending on the manufacturing technique used.

Chem Resist’s engineers will re-connect the new tank to an existing tank-vent fume scrubber.

Acid will be transferred back from the temporary storage facility.

The project is expected to be completed within six weeks.

Information on thermoplastic spiral wound tanks is available from Chem Resist.
