Citizen Machinery has launched the A32-VII CL, a larger-capacity, non-guide-bush version of its Evolution CNC sliding-head turn-mill centre. The 32mm-capacity machine is said to reduce production costs on expensive and difficult-to-machine materials.

The A32-VII CL has many of the features of the guide-bush version of the A32, with the added advantages of shorter workpiece production of a reduced length of bar remnant while enabling high dimensional accuracy and concentricity to be maintained.

High levels of flexibility enable multi-feature single-cycle machining sequences at the main 7.5kW, 6,000rev/min spindle and 3.7kW, 8,000rev/min backspindle, which can be applied using 28 tool positions, of which up to 13 tools can be driven by 1kW, 8,000rev/min motor.

Key features and benefits

  • The 32mm-capacity machine employs a common bed design with the A series with its tubular and centre rib cast construction offering high rigidity.
  • The spindle employs a centre rib design to ensure high performance using a hydraulic-powered chuck for turning and milling.
  • In the standard machine layout, six turning and four rotary tools are available for cross machining mounted on the gang tool post; one tool can be run at half speed giving the advantage of double torque, with an additional four tools available, each for front and back drilling. A further five driven tools are mounted on a separate back tool post.
  • Of four rotary tools available for cross machining, two have a maximum speed of 5,000rev/min, one is at a fixed 2:1 ratio with a maximum speed of 2,500rev/min and one with an interchangeable quill with an outer-diameter milling spindle.
  • As an option, the three driven tools for both ends can be mounted in a quill-type holder for cross machining, enabling features such as eccentrics to be produced on front and back end faces.
  • A further option for the five-spindle back tool post is the acceptance of four driven positions for milling/drilling spindles.
  • Cincom software is incorporated into the control, giving high processing speeds and reduced idle or non-cutting times involving axis feed overlap and direct C-axis spindle indexing.
  • The high-speed 45m/min rapid traverse rates and short acceleration and deceleration times maximise machine utilisation and contribute to lower cost-per-part production cycles.

Citizen Machinery

Citizen is the world leader in CNC sliding head ‘one-hit’ turn-milling technology. It has a range of machines having a maximum bar capacity between 4 mm on the compact micro-machining capable Citizen R04 to 32 mm on the top of the range Citizen M32-VII which has the added capability of two Y-axis cross-feeds.

The M32 can carry up to 80 tools, of which 20 can be driven, and can cut with three tools simultaneously giving low cycle times and high levels of productivity.  Also, fully automated unmanned cycles can be utilised through an integrated gantry option and conveyor system that helps ensure damage free parts during uninterrupted batch production.  A high pressure 2,000 psi CoolBlaster coolant system is a further option to optimise swarf control, tool life and machining difficult materials.

Following the acquisition in Japan in 2008 of 65 per cent shares in Miyano, the fixed head turning centre specialist, the two companies are maintaining their separate high profile brand names utilising a single sales operation.  However, turn-milling solutions from bar up to 64 mm diameter can now be provided.  In addition, with the Miyano range of turning and turn-milling machines for chucking operations, cell-type applications can now be accommodated with a wide range of automation options.
