Watson-Marlow Pumps has revealed how its Qdos 30 metering pump has been used by the water operations branch of the Corporation of the City of Barrie in Canada to replace diaphragm pump models in a potable water supply application.

Due to the high concentration of iron and manganese in the Barrie region, the water operations branch uses sodium silicate as a sequestering agent, binding Fe/Mn in soluble form to prevent the compound from oxidising on contact with air or chlorine.

Sodium silicate tends to give a hard coating to the ball valves within diaphragm pumps, which leads to clogging, meaning the pumps require disassembly and repair, which is very costly.

The Qdos metering pump successfully completed a trial in one of Barrie’s potable water stations and has needed no maintenance whatsoever.

Key benefits of product application

  • Qdos 30 pumps have no seals or valves in the flow path to leak or corrode, boosting efficiency by providing accurate, linear and repeatable flow performance from 0.1 to 500ml/min at 7 bar.
  • They can meter difficult fluids that are caustic, abrasive, viscous, shear sensitive or gaseous.
  • Due to the elimination of costs for spare parts and labour, the payback period for the pumps is fairly short.
