Union Tool’s Samurai series of coated end-milling cutters from Rainford Precision Machines is suitable for the mould and die, aerospace, automotive, medical and general subcontract industries.

The coated endmills are said to enable economical and productive machining of materials from aluminium through to carbon and stainless steel, titanium alloys and difficult-to-machine materials up to 55HRC.

The versatile Samurai series consists of 34 models ranging from 1mm to 12mm diameter.

There are three series available: the two-flute GB and the four-flute GCR series of ball-nosed cutters and the four-flute GS series of square end cutters.

The two-flute ball-nosed GB series offers 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 and 10mm diameter cutters with a length of cut ranging from 2.5-18mm.

With a 30-deg helix angle and the Samurai coating, the solid tungsten carbide cutter can conduct roughing and finish machining at high speed and feed rates.

For rapid material removal and high-feed machining, Union Tool has introduced its Samurai GCR series of four-flute corner radius cutters.

The GCR series has a 45-deg high helix angle to improve swarf removal when machining at high feeds and speeds.

This dissipates heat from the cutting edge and when combined with the optimum geometry design of the radius, the cutters are said to improve tool life.

The solid carbide range is available from 3mm to 12mm diameter with 3, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12mm diameters.

Each diameter in the GCR series has a variety of radii available to meet the needs of the end user.

The 3mm is available with a 0.5mm radius while the 4-8mm cutters deliver the option of 0.5mm or 1mm radius.

The 10mm cutter has 0.5mm to 2mm radius options in 0.5mm increments while the 12mm cutter has 0.5mm to 3mm radii in 0.5mm increments.

Each of the various diameters offer different lengths of cut and shank diameters to suit the specific needs of the end user.

Both GB and GCR series with corner radius are said to deliver good surface finishes with long tool life and high productivity.

For step, corner and general machining applications, Union Tool has developed its Samurai GS square end milling cutters.

The four-flute GS series is available from 1mm to 10mm diameter with 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 and 10mm diameter increments.

The GS also features the Samurai coating, making it suitable for high-feed and high-speed machining of carbon and stainless steels and titanium alloys up to 55HRC.

All endmills in the Samurai series have precision-ground shanks to within a tolerance of 0.005mm and are manufactured from high-quality tungsten carbide.

Rainford Precision Machines recommends that all cutters in the Samurai series work in conjunction with rigid and robust machine tools to obtain the optimum surface finish and tool life.

This is advised due to the high operating feed and speed capabilities of the series.
