Running alongside Plastics Design and Moulding (PDM12), the second annual Product Design + Innovation Conference, taking place at London’s ExCel on 29–30 May 2012, will explore how product designers can drive economic growth.

Chaired by Kevin McCullagh, director of product strategy consultancy Plan, the two-day conference dedicated to industrial design will feature speakers designing for leading brands in the UK and abroad.

‘As the West faces an era of stagnation, the mantra “doing more with less” is likely to define the challenge for innovators in the years to come,’ said McCullagh. ‘At the same time, new developments, such as the fusion of manufacturing and services, the consumerisation of healthcare and the emergence of smart systems and infrastructure, present fresh opportunities for designers.’

Shared learning is at the core of the conference, with sessions developed to address the barriers that exist between consultancies and in-house design teams. Insight will be delivered as genuine brand case studies, debates, pecha kucha sessions (a presentation method in which 20 slides are shown for 20 seconds each) and panel discussions.

Speaking after last year’s conference, Phil Gray, co-founder of Quadro Design Associates and a director of British Design Innovation, said: ‘It’s the first time I’ve been at an ID conference with a great bunch of delegates from both consultancies and industry. From the platform, we had a group of high-calibre speakers covering topics from the future, business models and different ways of working with clients, open innovation, materials, some great case studies and some seriously good insights into the impact of new technologies.’

Product Design + Innovation is aimed at senior product designers, as well as innovation professionals working for brand owners, OEMs and consultancies. Delegates will also have free access to PDM12.
