At the IJL exhibition at Earls Court, London, on 1–4 September 2013, Delcam will launch the 2013 version of its ArtCAM Jewelsmith software, which incorporates a new rendering package as well as a range of other enhancements. ArtCAM Jewelsmith is a specialist version of Delcam’s ArtCAM Pro artistic CADCAM software, with extra tools for the design and manufacture of rings, broaches, cufflinks and other jewellery.

ArtCAM Jewelsmith 2013 includes a new gem library, where any STL, OBJ, 3DS or 3DM file of a custom gem can be placed and used subsequently to create bespoke jewellery designs.

These designs can then be rendered in Keyshot, the new rendering engine, which will be supplied at no extra charge to ArtCAM Jewelsmith customers on maintenance. Keyshot is claimed to create extremely realistic design images. A more advanced rendering package — Advanced Keyshot Rendering — is available as an upgrade and offers additional features including unlimited rendering resolution, render queues, turntable animation and the ability to create 3D web pages.

Further enhancements

  • Interactive distortion modelling allows users to distort either vectors or reliefs by bending or stretching the design and to see the results in real time. This offers flexibility and will shorten design times by allowing changes to be visualised as they are happening.
  • Improvements in vector creation and editing have been made for users that create their designs from 2D drawings or sketches. New snapping options make vector creation much quicker. These offer the ability to snap to anything in the design, including any point on a vector, intersections between vectors, guidelines and key points within a model, such as the origin, centre and corners.
  • Vectors can be joined automatically when they are mirrored using any of the many mirroring options. This allows the faster creation of vertical and horizontal vector patterns. Vectors can also be offset interactively by dragging the offset to the required position as well as by a specified amount.
  • Users working from imported data will benefit from improvements to the Vector Doctor, which has been enhanced so that imported vectors can be cleaned up more quickly. Duplicate vectors, and vectors longer, shorter, larger and smaller than specified sizes, can be identified immediately. In addition, a new option helps to spot unobvious open vectors that could cause machining issues.
  • Designers can create moulds from ArtCAM Jewelsmith models by removing material from their designs to create draft surfaces while retaining the base shape of their models.

Delcam supplies software and services that help manufacturing companies to maximise their profitability by increasing productivity, improving quality and reducing lead times. The company is the world's largest specialist supplier of computer-aided machining software, with its PowerMILL, FeatureCAM, Partmaker and ArtCAM programs making up the most comprehensive range of CAM systems from any developer.

This broad selection allows Delcam to offer a CAM system capable of machining virtually any product, in any material on any type of equipment. Delcam also develops product design, tooling design and quality control programs. The unique Tribrid Modelling approach to design incorporates solid modelling, surface modelling and triangle modelling in a single program, enabling complete design and reverse engineering projects to be undertaken without transferring data between software.

Delcam's Powerinspect offers fast, reliable comparison of parts, prototypes and tooling against CAD data on all types of inspection equipment and even on machine tools. This versatility has made it the world's leading hardware-independent inspection software. Related programs are available for checking machine tool set-up and part location. Delcam software is used in over 80 countries worldwide by around 40,000 organisations, from large multi-nationals to small sub-contractors, in industries including aerospace, automotive, dental, engineering, footwear, medical and toolmaking.
