In an effort to enable the machining of larger and more complex plastic parts, Dalau, a PTFE processor based in Clacton-on-Sea, has invested in a new DMG machine programmed with Delcam’s FeatureCAM software and a Hexagon inspection arm programmed with the Powerinspect inspection software.

Dalau’s products have been specified for a diverse range of industrial applications. For instance, the company manufactures parts for Formula One race cars and has been given AS 9100 approval to produce components for the new Airbus A380 and the Eurofighter.

According to Philip Alston, production manager for machined components at Dalau, the company made the move to five-axis milling in response to an increased demand for larger and more complex designs.

To this end, Dalau invested in a Cincinnati machine, which came with a recommendation to use Delcam software for programming. Most recently, the company has increased its capabilities with a DMG CTX Gamma 2000 TC, which features a combination milling and turning spindle with an NC-controlled B axis.

Key benefits of product application

  • Even though the company specialised in turning rather than milling, it was quickly able to take full advantage of the software thanks to support from Delcam.
  • Alston explained that Powershape has been a real advantage for Dalau as its design capabilities were limited before it had 3D software.
  • He added that Delcam’s Powermill CAM software has enabled the company to make the most of its five-axis machine.

Delcam supplies software and services that help manufacturing companies to maximise their profitability by increasing productivity, improving quality and reducing lead times. The company is the world's largest specialist supplier of computer-aided machining software, with its PowerMILL, FeatureCAM, Partmaker and ArtCAM programs making up the most comprehensive range of CAM systems from any developer.

This broad selection allows Delcam to offer a CAM system capable of machining virtually any product, in any material on any type of equipment. Delcam also develops product design, tooling design and quality control programs. The unique Tribrid Modelling approach to design incorporates solid modelling, surface modelling and triangle modelling in a single program, enabling complete design and reverse engineering projects to be undertaken without transferring data between software.

Delcam's Powerinspect offers fast, reliable comparison of parts, prototypes and tooling against CAD data on all types of inspection equipment and even on machine tools. This versatility has made it the world's leading hardware-independent inspection software. Related programs are available for checking machine tool set-up and part location. Delcam software is used in over 80 countries worldwide by around 40,000 organisations, from large multi-nationals to small sub-contractors, in industries including aerospace, automotive, dental, engineering, footwear, medical and toolmaking.
