Delcam’s Powershape CAD, Powermill CAM and Powerinspect inspection software products have helped precision engineering company Amdale to combine rapid lead times with high quality and competitive value.

Amdale, a family-owned business formed in Portsmouth, increased its five-axis machining capacity with the addition of two new DMG/Mori Seiki machining centres earlier this year, following a factory extension to 7,700ft² (715m²) last year.

The company is heavily involved in manufacturing development parts for the automobile industry, particularly Formula One (F1), as well as the medical industry, for which a range of materials are machined. It is currently working on increasing the aerospace side of its business.

Having purchased its first Delcam software around 15 years ago, Arndale now operates two seats of Powershape, two of Powermill and one of Powerinspect to support its range of five-axis machines.

Key benefits of product application

  • Nathan Cheung from Amdale said: ‘We opted for Delcam because of the quality of the finish produced on our sample components.’
  • There are no data translation problems between receiving customer data and progressing through programming, machining and inspection.
  • Once the data is imported, Arndale can quickly prepare parts for manufacturing and develop tooling and workholding designs in Powershape.
  • The fast programming and machining offered by the Delcam software is essential to meet the rapid turnaround times demanded by F1 customers during the race season. The software’s high accuracy is also important, both to maximise power and to give reliability in the engines.
  • The Powerinspect interface enables parts to be programmed for inspection fairly rapidly and simply.
  • According to Amdale, the multitude of five-axis strategies available means there is never a part of the job that cannot be physically machined.
  • The company was impressed with the pre-/after-sales care, the fact the product is tested in a real-life environment in Delcam’s own machine shop and the re-investment into development.

Delcam supplies software and services that help manufacturing companies to maximise their profitability by increasing productivity, improving quality and reducing lead times. The company is the world's largest specialist supplier of computer-aided machining software, with its PowerMILL, FeatureCAM, Partmaker and ArtCAM programs making up the most comprehensive range of CAM systems from any developer.

This broad selection allows Delcam to offer a CAM system capable of machining virtually any product, in any material on any type of equipment. Delcam also develops product design, tooling design and quality control programs. The unique Tribrid Modelling approach to design incorporates solid modelling, surface modelling and triangle modelling in a single program, enabling complete design and reverse engineering projects to be undertaken without transferring data between software.

Delcam's Powerinspect offers fast, reliable comparison of parts, prototypes and tooling against CAD data on all types of inspection equipment and even on machine tools. This versatility has made it the world's leading hardware-independent inspection software. Related programs are available for checking machine tool set-up and part location. Delcam software is used in over 80 countries worldwide by around 40,000 organisations, from large multi-nationals to small sub-contractors, in industries including aerospace, automotive, dental, engineering, footwear, medical and toolmaking.
