Standardising on Delcam’s Powerinspect system as its sole inspection software has enabled Shenyang Liming Aero Engine to implement an enterprise-wide digital inspection platform. It has improved the efficiency of the company’s enterprise management systems, as well as the quality and consistency of its production.

Shenyang Liming — a key part of Chinese aircraft producer AVIC and an experienced centre for aero-engine manufacture and repair in the country — uses a range of information systems to manage its manufacturing processes, including software for product data management and engineering resource planning. An important part of these processes is obtaining quality-control data and integrating those results into the enterprise-wide systems.

The company found this challenging because it was using a variety of brands of co-ordinate-measuring machines (CMMs), fitted with various types of inspection software. The overall result was that the company’s inspection data was fragmented and did not integrate well with the existing information systems. This made it difficult to monitor product quality and, therefore, to identify any areas that needed improvement.

To overcome these problems, Shenyang Liming standardised on Delcam’s Powerinspect software, using a combination of Powerinspect OMV for on-machine verification on its machine tools and Powerinspect CNC for its computer-controlled CMMs.

Key benefits of product application

  • For each piece of equipment, Powerinspect has been customised to provide a dedicated inspection system for that machine. Parts are inspected using the appropriate techniques for surface and edge inspection, with comprehensive reports sent to the relevant departments through DNC links.
  • Since many of the staff reading the reports produced by Powerinspect are not metrology specialists, the software’s professional, easy-to-understand reporting is highly valued. As the software is so easy to learn and use, training was completed quickly.
  • The main benefit of the software has been the ability to integrate the results seamlessly with the company’s management systems.
  • The ability to simulate the complete machine environment, and to undertake collision detection on the computer, means that users can be confident that the programs they produce will perform efficiently and safely before they are passed to the machine.
  • Powerinspect’s ability to read all types of CAD data makes it easy for Shenyang Liming to receive design data from the many other manufacturing companies within AVIC.
  • The software can produce programs that are compatible with many machine controllers so there is no need to change machine settings to undertake the inspections. The software’s offline programming supports I and DMIS standards and offers many options for customisation for different types of inspection equipment.
  • The change to Powerinspect at Shenyang Liming has improved the efficiency of inspection processes and the management of results.

Delcam supplies software and services that help manufacturing companies to maximise their profitability by increasing productivity, improving quality and reducing lead times. The company is the world's largest specialist supplier of computer-aided machining software, with its PowerMILL, FeatureCAM, Partmaker and ArtCAM programs making up the most comprehensive range of CAM systems from any developer.

This broad selection allows Delcam to offer a CAM system capable of machining virtually any product, in any material on any type of equipment. Delcam also develops product design, tooling design and quality control programs. The unique Tribrid Modelling approach to design incorporates solid modelling, surface modelling and triangle modelling in a single program, enabling complete design and reverse engineering projects to be undertaken without transferring data between software.

Delcam's Powerinspect offers fast, reliable comparison of parts, prototypes and tooling against CAD data on all types of inspection equipment and even on machine tools. This versatility has made it the world's leading hardware-independent inspection software. Related programs are available for checking machine tool set-up and part location. Delcam software is used in over 80 countries worldwide by around 40,000 organisations, from large multi-nationals to small sub-contractors, in industries including aerospace, automotive, dental, engineering, footwear, medical and toolmaking.
