Delcam will showcase its Powershape computer-aided-design (CAD) software at the CADCAM Matters organised by the Machinery magazine, taking place at Donington Park on 18 November.

The 2010 version features reinforced solid modelling abilities thanks to the incorporation of the Parasolid kernel alongside Powershape’s established surface modelling operations.

The combination of the two technologies will offer benefits both to designers that undertake conceptual design with Powershape and to toolmakers that use the software for data translation and tooling design.

Powershape can design and edit complex shapes.

The addition of the Parasolid kernel will give equal strength in the development of history-based geometric models.

The combination of the two technologies is important for designers of plastic products and housings, according to the company.

These frequently need surface modelling to create an attractive external shape but require solid modelling to generate the more geometric internal features, such as reinforcing ribs and bosses for fixing.

A similar mix of technology is needed for tooling design.

Surface modelling is essential to undertake detailed operations such as creating and adjusting split lines.

Solid modelling works well when the designer moves from creating the core and cavity into building the rest of the tool.

Most of these other components are made up from simpler prismatic shapes and the Parasolid kernel is described as the leader for this type of design work.

At the CADCAM Matters event, Delcam will also demonstrate its range of machining systems for computer-aided-manufacturing (CAM) software and services.

Peter Dickin, the company’s marketing manager for China, said: ‘With Powermill, FeatureCAM, Partmaker or ArtCAM, we now offer a CAM system to machine virtually any product, in any material on any type of equipment.

‘Recently, we have added dedicated products for the manufacture of dental restorations and the production of orthotics,’ he added.

Delcam supplies software and services that help manufacturing companies to maximise their profitability by increasing productivity, improving quality and reducing lead times. The company is the world's largest specialist supplier of computer-aided machining software, with its PowerMILL, FeatureCAM, Partmaker and ArtCAM programs making up the most comprehensive range of CAM systems from any developer.

This broad selection allows Delcam to offer a CAM system capable of machining virtually any product, in any material on any type of equipment. Delcam also develops product design, tooling design and quality control programs. The unique Tribrid Modelling approach to design incorporates solid modelling, surface modelling and triangle modelling in a single program, enabling complete design and reverse engineering projects to be undertaken without transferring data between software.

Delcam's Powerinspect offers fast, reliable comparison of parts, prototypes and tooling against CAD data on all types of inspection equipment and even on machine tools. This versatility has made it the world's leading hardware-independent inspection software. Related programs are available for checking machine tool set-up and part location. Delcam software is used in over 80 countries worldwide by around 40,000 organisations, from large multi-nationals to small sub-contractors, in industries including aerospace, automotive, dental, engineering, footwear, medical and toolmaking.
