Alloy wheel specialist Rimstock is using Powermill CAM software from Delcam to help boost its production to more than 350,000 wheels per year while maintaining high quality and rapid delivery times.

West-Bromwich-based Rimstock produces forged aluminium alloy wheels and cast alloy wheels for the motorsport and luxury vehicle markets.

The manufacturer has used two seats of Powermill for all of its CAM programming for the last four years. The decision to use the software was prompted by Rimstock’s purchase of its first five-axis machine — a Haas VF5 — five years ago.

The company now has six five-axis Haas machines that are used mainly for finish machining, as well as three Doosan machines for finer three-axis work. Six older Cincinnati three-axis machines are used primarily for roughing.

Rimstock said it has been able to achieve much lower cycle times by moving to five-axis machining.

  • Andrew Colbourne, forge shop manager at Rimstock, said that all of the company’s programming and machining is now completed in house, which gives it more control over scheduling and quality.
  • Colbourne said that the company uses Catia and Pro/E for design and has never had any problems importing data into Powermill.
  • Colbourne selected the Delcam software after a visit to the company’s Birmingham headquarters. He explained: ‘None of the other suppliers had anything that could compare with the support that Delcam could offer.’
  • Other deciding factors included Delcam’s good reputation, as well as its locality to the Rimstock site.
  • Colbourne said that Powermill gives Rimstock exactly what it needs, including a level of finish from the mills that was previously only possible by grinding. He added that leads and links can be edited so that five-axis transitions can be positioned in areas of the surface that won’t be visible.
  • Delcam and Haas worked together well to solve any problems experienced at Rimstock.
