Secomak has worked with a major European integrator to supply Mistral V drying equipment for 17 production lines of a Chinese beverage manufacturer’s production lines, to help with quality control.

Producers are under significant pressure to ensure every liquid container has total integrity in terms of the cap and closure, especially as the shape, style and nature of caps and tamper proof systems becomes increasingly complex.

At the drinks manufacturer’s factory, the Mistral V was installed after the bottle-filling machine and prior to the vision inspection system as part of a quality control system.

The vision system captures images of every single bottle produced, compares them to a reference image, then rejects those not conforming to the datum.

With this system, the presence of tiny water droplets causes issues.

Firstly, the droplets represent more data for the system to analyse, a process that at full production speeds requires results for each bottle to be confirmed in the time it takes a bottle to pass.

The cumulative extra information can give rise to processing errors.

Secondly, vision systems are designed to be sensitive enough in order to pick out the smallest faults in the closure.

This creates problems with water droplets appearing in contrast to the background, which can thus appear to be part of the closure.

This renders comparison with the reference image incorrect, meaning a good bottle could be rejected.

When water droplets are abundant, the rate of false rejects can be very high, leading to many complications in production and requiring an extra manual inspection of the rejects themselves.

The Secomak Mistral V machine aids production through restoring the rates of false rejects to an acceptable level, reducing wastage and saving time and money.

Secomak’s design team worked with its client to produce a simple digital winding system for the height, making the adjustments as similar as possible to the rest of the production line.

A special micro nozzle, designed in conjunction with the Aeronautics department of Hatfield University, improves the system’s energy efficiency.

When combined with the Air Minder control package, the Mistral V operates at less than 70db and consumes less than the equivalent of 2kW of energy.
