DS technology has launched a heavy-duty machine at the EMO show in Milan, the moving-column Mecof model, Mecmill Plus.

Axis traverses on the machine at the show were X: 6000, Y: 1600 and Z: 4000mm.

The main 52kW drive with 1,200Nm maximum torque is consistent with high levels of productivity.

An automatic head changer was deployed to exchange various milling heads, such as a universal milling head with a 38kW output offering 1,000Nm of torque, at up to 6,000rev/min.

Positioning resolution of the programmable, two-axis head is 0.001deg in both axes.

The fluid cooling system guarantees thermal stability even during heavy, continuous machining.

The coolant supply is available as flood delivery around the cutter and through the tool.

Other features were a Selca S4045 PDH control, an 80-pocket tool magazine and a motorised operator platform.

Available also for demonstration at the show was a five-axis, geared milling head, a horizontal geared offset milling head and an angle head of compact dimensions.

Represented by DS Technology UK, Doerries Scharmann Technologie (DST), is set to expand its business following the opening of a production facility in Germany.

The company has invested in a production hall at the Droop+Rein site in Bielefeld that will concentrate on building portal and gantry milling machines, as well as ram-type boring mills up to 40 (L) x 8 (W) x 16m (H).

In addition, production of vertical turning machines with drilling, milling or grinding units and table diameters of up to 12m will be centred in the facility, which occupies 120 x 28m of floor space and is 23m high.

The large size and floor foundations of the hall, combined with an overhead crane of 80 tonnes capacity, means that any size of DST machine can be built.

Typical orders for heavy-duty machine tools in the company’s build program are destined for manufacturing applications such as large diesel-engine components, turbines and gearboxes, propellers such as those used to propel passenger liners or large container ships, and components for power plants and wind-power generation.

Machines can be configured to incorporate practically every type of metal cutting process, including drilling, milling, turning and grinding, making all of these technologies available from a single source.

If required, they can be combined into a single machine.
