Ejot’s R and D capability Applitec, along with its Delta PT thermoplastics fastener, contributed to the development of threat-detection equipment now being produced in the UK for military personnel.

Design engineers tasked with the manufacture of intricate equipment such as proximity sensors for armaments and mobile monitoring systems are under pressure to produce smaller, lighter units.

Yet the nature of these applications means there can be no compromise to performance and durability.

Manufacturing for such applications has traditionally relied almost entirely on conventional nut-and-bolt engineering but as theatre demands more mobility and increased efficiency, parts reduction in the manufacturing process has become highly significant.

The core design of Ejot’s Delta PT originates from automotive assembly design and was specially developed for screw joints in thermoplastic materials.

The thread geometry creates low surface pressure and provides for a high clamp force within the finished assembly.

Features of Ejot’s fasteners that appealed to designers included their high resistance to vibration, good electrical insulation and prospect of reducing overall parts and cost.

Designers were forced to investigate a 2mm screw requiring an insert of 6mm diameter plus boss of 10mm diameter.

Once clamping loads were established, Ejot’s application engineers were able to deploy Applitec’s online prognosis program, Deltacalc, taking the proposed Delta PT’s small dimensioning to forecast its load-carrying capabilities among others.

Calculations proved that because the screw fully engaged in the thread it was forming, Ejot was able to go further and demonstrate that a 1.6mm Delta PT not only withstood vibration more efficiently but reduced the boss diameter down to just 4mm, as the insert was removed entirely.

Conductivity trials showed that any electro-static discharge stopped at the screw as the plastic bosses operated as an insulator, thus protecting the electronic components.

In addition, online prognosis eliminated need for a test-run schedule budgeted and approved at a cost of over GBP200,000.

Production of the proximity sensors is now underway and the product is expected to be in full deployment by 2011.
