The Ultravap evaporator from Porvair Sciences is ideal for removing unwanted solvents from laboratory microplates.

The open-access design of the Ultravap, combined with the full RS232 control of every parameter, enables integration with laboratory robotics.

The company has refined the Ultravap design to simplify integration with laboratory robots, to increase operational versatility and to enable the safe venting of removed solvents.

The plan form of the leading edges of the unit has been redesigned to give robot gripper arms an extra 22mm of linear access to the evaporation deck.

This allows the gripper to handle even heavy deep-well blocks and to position them under the evaporation head precisely.

In addition, Porvair has released a set of side panels that fit on either side of the unit to ensure that exhaust gas carrying solvent fumes can be extracted either to the front or rear of the unit.

To facilitate the connection of the rear vent to a standard fume extraction duct, a new optional adaptor enables the direct connection of a 4in-diameter fume duct to the evaporator.

Software and hardware drivers for the Porvair Ultravap are now available for Tecan, Hamilton and Beckman laboratory robots.

Designed to quickly and safely remove solvents from 96- or 384-well plates, the Ultravap microplate evaporator optimises microplate sample preparation productivity.

The Ultravap achieves high sample throughput through advanced evaporator head technology and a manifold design, which directly injects heated nitrogen into each individual well of the microplate simultaneously.

The system removes most chromatography solvents in just minutes, according to the company.

For heat-sensitive and thermally labile samples, the Ultravap may be operated in a two-stage mode combining rapid initial dry-down with controlled final solvent evaporation.

The Ultravap is said to be simple to install, operate and maintain.

Installation requires connection to a gas supply/cylinder and a standard mains socket.

Safe operation is ensured as the CE-marked, compact unit fits into all fume cupboards.
