Steel Fabrications Martock, a fabricator of steelwork for retail, industrial, commercial and educational uses, has purchased a Ficep Orient 6 CNC machine to increase the accuracy of its drilling line.

The fabrication workshop is fully equipped with some of the latest fabrication equipment and CNC machinery and the design office uses Strucad 3D steel detailing software.

The new high-performance CNC machine is one of the latest generation of Ficep drilling lines designed to process beams and profiles quickly, accurately and cost effectively.

It is equipped with a single drill head that can be oriented in three positions at high speed, reducing dead times in the drilling cycle.

The powerful spindle and a high-speed tool changer facilitate quick drilling operations using all kind of drills.

Andy Allman, contracts manager of Steel Fabrications Martock, said: ‘We were looking to increase the productivity, capability and accuracy of structural steel fabricated within our workshop.

‘After extensive research of the drilling machines available in the marketplace, we concluded that the Ficep Orient 6 most closely matched our requirements and expectations.

‘The major benefits we have seen are the significant increases in speed and accuracy and, subsequently, the quality of the fabricated steel that we are producing on our Ficep drilling line.

‘This increase in accuracy has been particularly noticeable while erecting the steelwork on site using our own experienced erecting teams, which now spend far less time on correcting snagging mistakes with holes etc.

‘To date, several thousand tons of structural steel used on projects throughout the south of England have been produced using our Ficep Orient 6 machine, which has now become an important part of our fabrication process,’ he added.
