Flir Systems has broadened the scope of its product range and is now offering a range of test and measurement tools. The range currently consists of six products but is expected to grow rapidly.

Three electrical meters are included in the range. They feature large and clear LCD displays and bright dual-LED work lights to illuminate dimly lit work areas. They include Bluetooth connectivity to Android mobile devices running the latest Flir Tools mobile app.

These additions will also have the ability to connect wirelessly to Meterlink-enabled Flir thermal-imaging cameras so that electrical readings can be embedded into infrared images in real time. The meters include the Flir DM93, a rugged digital multimeter; the Flir CM83, an industrial-grade power clamp meter; and the Flir CM78, which is a combination of an RMS multimeter and clamp meter.

Other additions include the Flir VP52 voltage detector, a compact, non-contact voltage detector; the Flir MR77 moisture meter; and the Flir VS70 — a videoscope designed for use in the industrial environment.

Products in detail

Flir DM93

  • A rugged digital multimeter with advanced variable frequency drive (VFD) filtering
  • Allows accurate analysis of non-sinusoidal waveforms and noisy signals found in VFD-controlled equipment
  • Special mode to eliminate ghost readings and automatic data recording to detect intermittent glitches are standard features

Flir CM83

  • An industrial-grade power clamp meter with power analysis and advanced VFD filtering for testing three-phase systems and VFD-controlled equipment
  • Features include a harmonics mode to find noise from different electrical sources; ‘phase rotation’ to confirm phase orientation of three phase systems; and ‘inrush current’ to detect start-up transients

Flir CM78

  • Combines the capabilities of a true RMS (square root of mean square) multimeter and clamp meter with a non-contact infrared thermometer and Type K thermocouple
  • Suitable for use on industrial equipment and complex machinery
  • Enables users to capture accurate AC/DC readings up to 1,000A or 1,000V

Flir VP52

  • A compact, non-contact voltage detector with a powerful LED work light as well as dual-LED convenience lights at the probe tip
  • Features include vibration feedback and multi-coloured LED alarms — useful for inspections conducted in noisy areas
  • High-/low-sensitivity modes for testing industrial equipment low voltage systems and tamper-proof outlets are standard

Flir MR77

  • A moisture meter that features a pinless sensor and an external pin probe that capture moisture readings up to 19mm below the surface of various building materials
  • This rugged instrument includes a field-replaceable temperature/humidity sensor, spot infrared thermometer and laser pointer
  • Readings from the Flir MR77 can be transferred via Bluetooth to Android devices running Flir Tools Mobile app and via Meterlink to similarly enabled Flir thermal-imaging cameras

Flir VS70

  • Videoscope designed for use in the industrial environment
  • Features intuitive handset controls that enable the user to guide the probe into tight areas to deliver clear video images to a large 5.7in colour LCD display
  • Provides 180° and 90° camera views and SD card storage of video, image and audio files
  • Voice comments can be captured via the product’s headset
  • Battery life is six to eight hours and a USB port is included for easy recharging

The options that FLIR Systems provides for measuring temperature and studying thermal performance have never been greater.  Not only does the company offer a huge range of models to suit all thermal application needs but the technology is also affordable and very easy to use.  Thermal cameras now come in various shapes, sizes and degrees of sophistication and FLIR continues to invest heavily in the development of new and complementary technologies to differentiate itself from competitors.

An important milestone in the development of thermal imaging has been the introduction of the FLIR Lepton® core, a micro longwave detector, the size of a mobile SIM.  This has allowed thermal imaging to be repackaged to meet the needs of an even wider audience and, in combination with another new technology called Infrared Guided Measurement – IGM™ – has led to the development of a range of test and measurement meters with imaging capability.

Another important growth area for FLIR thermal imaging is in continuous monitoring to assure quality and safety.  Through its introduction of discrete fixed mounted thermal cameras which are fully compliant industry standard plug-and-play protocols, FLIR Systems has provided industry with infrared machine vision which is instantly ready for quick and easy network installation.

Protecting assets and people from fire is an area for which thermal imaging is least known but, thanks to FLIR Systems’ development, it is now one of the most cost-effective methods available.  Its application flexibility and rapid return on investment present an attractive proposition for any site or safety manager.
