Fronius has launched the VR 5000 Case, a rugged and compact briefcase-format wirefeeder designed for use in the dusty, damp and salty environments found in shipyards and on offshore platforms.

The VR 5000 Case is portable and can be used in combination with Transsteel MIG/MAG power sources, which are designed for separate wirefeed units. It offers welders a complete, optimally co-ordinated system for use in shipbuilding, oil-rig construction, railway vehicle manufacturing and site erection.

It is tailored for the adverse working conditions encountered in these fields of use, featuring an extra-sturdy plastic housing, skid runners and rugged, strain-relieved connectors.

The unit can be dragged directly by the torch hose pack, as well as lifted or let down from height by the interconnecting hose pack. Novel connectors ensure the connections do not work loose in these situations.

Key features and benefits

  • Flame-resistant case is unaffected by dust, moisture, salty air and splash water
  • External dimensions of 507 x 200 x 320mm mean it fits through any manhole measuring up to 350mm in diameter
  • Case is designed with minimised obstacle contours, protecting the unit against getting caught, stuck or jammed while being used
  • Front panel with controls is recessed, protecting it against damage
  • Case features an ergonomically shaped handle
  • Unit weight is less than 10kg
  • It is easy to carry, even for longer distances
  • Interconnecting hose packs of up to 70m in length (for gas-cooled welding systems) allow a very wide radius of action
  • Bayonet latch with inside locking mechanism allows the welder to fix and detach the torch hose pack and interconnecting hose pack quickly and securely
  • Tilt-down side covers are integrated on both sides of the unit, with snap closures that are easy to open and close, even when the welder has gloves on
  • Side covers provide optimum access to the inside connectors for the hose packs, as well as to the motor plate and wire spool
  • VR 5000 Case is designed to be used with a 5kg wire spool measuring 200mm in diameter
  • After the spool is changed, the Comfortwire function inches the wire in unaided, which helps save time
  • Four-roller drive ensures constant wire travel during welding
  • Fronius offers the feeder unit in several equipment configurations: water- or gas-cooled versions or in a synergic version
  • Optional gas flow regulator allows users to set and control the flow of shielding gas directly from the feeder unit with precision
  • Optional on/off switch reliably prevents unwanted contact ignition during transit
  • VR 5000 Case can be ordered with an electrode socket at the rear of the unit

For decades, Fronius has made significant contributions to advances in welding technology. The company is still in family ownership and its welding technology division is now one of the world’s technology leaders in the arc welding market segment. It is also the market leader in Europe.

Welding Technology is one of three Fronius divisions. Since the 1940s, Fronius has been creating technologies and solutions for monitoring and controlling energy in battery-charging systems, and since 1992 the same in solar electronics. The mains-connected inverter, the unique Fronius Service Partner programme and products for monitoring photovoltaic systems make Fronius one of the leading suppliers in the field of solar electronics.
