Garlock Sealing Technologies has created an ultra-low-emission, high-temperature, valve-stem spool packing to simplify leak detection and repair in the hydrocarbon- and chemical-processing industries.

According to the company, the Style 212-ULE packing meets global emission standards.

Tested worldwide by a major hydrocarbon processor, the packing delivered an emissions performance of less than 20ppm average leakage.

It also was successfully fire tested to API 589.

Garlock’s Style 212-ULE packing is comprised of two types of graphite packing.

One of the braids is manufactured from a proprietary yarn consisting of several strands of high-purity Graph-Lock contained by an Inconel filament jacket.

This wire filament is just 0.004in (0.1016mm) in diameter, making the finished braid non-scoring and thermally conductive.

The other braid is manufactured from graphite fibre, reinforced flexible graphite yarns and high-purity graphite filament yarns.

The packing is self-lubricating for low valve-stem friction, meaning that it is non-hardening, dimensionally stable, impervious to gases and fluids and corrosion-resistant.

It comes in a 100 per cent-recyclable dispenser with colour-coded instructions.

The number of typical valves that can be repacked appears on the packaging, helping users to reduce outage schedules and inventory requirements.

Included in each dispenser are valve labels for indicating installation date and time to retighten packing glands, as well as a low-spool tag alerting users to reorder.

The valve-stem packing can withstand operating temperatures from – 328F (-200C) to +1,200F (+650C) in steam and non-oxidising environments and up to +850F (+455C) in media containing free oxygen.

The maximum pressure rating is 4,500psig (310bar) and the pH rating is 0-14, except for strong oxidisers.

The Style 212-ULE packing is available in diameters of 1/8in to 5/8in in increments of 1/16in for average stem diameters of 0.375in to 5.00in.

Depending on the diameter, lengths vary from 22.3ft (6.8m) to 127.6ft for packing an average of between five and 150 valves.
