Hardinge has used Heidenhain control functionality and drives technology and a high-accuracy linear-scale positioning option to create a compact five-axis vertical machining centre.

The GX 250 5AX is the latest addition to the 5AX series, which already includes the larger XR 300 and XR 600.

The latest addition provides a greater than normal working envelope for its base size, according to the company.

It is able to accept components of up to 250mm in diameter by 240mm in length, with the high-speed cutting capability of a 20,000rev/min spindle available as an option.

The GX 250 5AX has a 20-tool-capacity magazine supplying the HSK A63 taper spindle powered by a built-in 23kW, 20,000rev/min motor, providing a torque level of 37.4Nm.

Accuracy in X, Y and Z is within 7 microns and repeatability is within 4 microns through its linear-scale positioning option.

Accuracy levels achieved in the rotary table A-axis tilt of +30deg to -120deg is 20 arc seconds and 10 seconds in the 360deg rotary C axis.

Axis strokes are 300mm in X, 400mm in Y and 430mm in Z, with a 210mm-diameter high-rigidity rotary table with tilt.

The table unit incorporates a ‘big-bore’ cross roller bearing to ensure accuracy and support heavy cutting loads.

Rapid traverse rates are 30m/min through the working volume on 35mm roller-type linear guideways, which also help to improve rigidity.

Heidenhain’s latest iTNC 530 five-axis simultaneous control is standard with the inclusion of dynamic collision monitoring, enabling the full working zone to be effectively utilised.

Tools measuring up to 80mm in diameter by 250mm in length and weighing up to 6kg can be carried in the 20-position magazine with swing-arm change.

Tool diameter can be increased to 95mm with the adjacent pockets left empty.

The tool-to-tool time is within three seconds.

Hardinge will be found on Stand 5475 in Hall 5 at the upcoming Mach 2010 event, which is due to be held at the NEC in Birmingham.
