High-throughput digestion of food and other organic samples

Laboratories in the food industry as well as in food safety authorities have an ever increasing demand for fast, yet easy-to-use acid digestion of food and other organic samples for trace analysis of toxic elements.

An experiment was performed by Anton Paar by digestion and elemental quantification of the certified standard reference materials ‘Trace Elements in Spinach Leaves’.

(NIST1570a) and ‘Oyster tissue’ (NIST1566b) in mixed digestion run with fully and partially loaded rotors.

The digestions were carried out in HVT56 using the Multiwave PRO microwave reactor system from Anton Paar with Rotor 41HVT56.

The generic method Organic A used in the report generated from this experiment also works for the digestion of numerous food and other organic samples such as:

  • Fruits, e.g. apple, grape, blueberry
  • Plants, e.g. different types of vegetables, corn, mushrooms, cereals, wood, renewable fuels
  • Biological samples, e.g. meat, meat product, leather
  • Oily samples, e.g. pumpkin seed oil, olive oil, several nut samples

For fruit, plant and biological samples a maximum sample weight of 0.8–1g dry weight can be digested. If the water content of fresh samples is known, it can be deducted.

Due to the higher molecular carbon content of oil samples, the sample amount should not be larger than 0.5–0.7g for good digestion quality.
