Crowcon has launched the IRmax, an ultra-compact infrared (IR) gas detector that is designed to detect hydrocarbon gases in harsh conditions.

IRmax is said to deliver rapid, fail-safe detection of hydrocarbon gases with low power consumption and is easy to install in even the most inaccessible locations.

Featuring dual-wavelength IR sensor technology in a rugged 316 stainless steel package, IRmax is designed to operate in temperatures ranging from -40C to +75C.

IRmax does not utilise heaters to prevent condensation on windows and mirrors.

Instead, it has Stay-Clir optical components that are treated with a durable coating that prevents faults due to condensation.

Because IRmax contains no components for artificially heating optical surfaces, power consumption is reduced; the device requires only 1W of power.

IRmax detectors require smaller and lower-cost power supplies and battery back-up systems.

In addition, low power consumption also means longer cables can be used and more detectors can be powered on addressable networks.

A fast T90 response time of four seconds is possible because of a compact diffusion gas chamber in combination with an effective weatherproof cap.

The weatherproof cap also enables remote gassing and calibration of the detector without requiring a special calibration cap and without the need for scaffolding or cherry pickers to access the detector.

The IRmax also features an optional IR display, which can be fitted directly to the detector or mounted to up 30m away to enable checking and calibration of detectors situated in remote or inaccessible areas.

As well as delivering essential non-intrusive calibration functions, the display also provides diagnostic information and features to simplify testing and commissioning.

Atex- and IECEx-certified for use in Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous areas, IRmax features Hart communications and complies with the IEC61508 functional safety standard to SIL2.
