ICEE has created a frame in house to demonstrate the different engineering services the company has supplied for industries such as marine and architectural. The frame, which was showcased on ICEE’s Subcon stand, highlighted the cutting capabilities of the waterjet, fibre laser and fabrications teams.

The frame was designed internally in collaboration with ICEE’s drawing office and the sales and marketing team. It needed to fit into a crate used to transport the exhibition pieces and be an ‘L’ shape in order to save space.

Team capabilities

Waterjet cutting

  • To show the cutting capability of the waterjet, it was decided to cut marine ply and a white acrylic.
  • This also shows the accuracy of the cutting as the acrylic pieces slot into the pattern cut into the wood.
  • The panel showed that there is no heat distortion and no heat-affected zones.
  • It also showed that the technology can cut virtually any material.

Fibre laser cutting

  • The fibre laser panel of the frame was designed to show how there is less heat distortion compared with conventional laser cutting (CO2) — by using the cut panel straight from the machine. This showed no oxidation.
  • This would usually be removed after cutting where possible and would add more time to what can be a simple job.
  • A fibre laser can eliminate this process, therefore reducing the time and cost it takes to complete a job.
  • The technology can cut aluminium, copper and brass, which would usually be processed on the waterjet (more expensive) or machined (lots of expensive material waste)

Welded frame

  • The frame was welded in house and was used to demonstrate a service that ICEE has supplied for the marine and architectural industries.

Waterjet profile cutting

The capability to cut intricate shapes utilising cold cutting techniques that are without thermal influences, heat distortion, edge hardening or heat-affected zones of virtually any material. Our waterjet is capable of cutting 4,000 x 2,000 x 200mm thicknesses. 

Profile cutting using fibre laser technology

Laser cutting is considered to be one the most accurate methods of cutting thick and thin metals. Our fibre laser has a cutting area of 3,000 x 1,500m and is capable of cutting profiles from:

  • Mild steel — up to 12mm
  • Stainless steel — up to 6mm
  • Aluminium — up to 8mm
  • Brass — up to 4mm
  • Copper — up to 3mm

The benefits of fibre laser over conventional CO2 lasers include reduced cutting times, wider material range and less heat used.

Sheet-metal fabrications

ICEE has the capability of applying its knowledge of fabricating enclosures to a wide range of sheet-metal fabrication projects. We have a 4mm brake press for larger requirements (we use this in the manufacturing of our enclosures) and a smaller brake press.
