The new Insert Line indexable insert peripheral grinding machine, part of the Ewag range of tool grinders from Koerber Schleifring, is designed to reduce processing times by up to 50 per cent.

Such time savings over conventional peripheral grinders are possible through the availability of variable grinding wheel diameters of up to 500mm – to allow the processing of complex and concave shapes – and machine kinematics via, for example, hydrostatic guideways that help to maintain high-quality cutting edges.

In operation, the Ewag Insert Line produces a theoretical linear contact between the indexable insert and the grinding machine.

These ‘free’ positions between the workpiece and the grinding wheel ensure less friction, meaning that thermal stress in the contact area is correspondingly lower and surface damage is eliminated, generating increased removal rates.

Improvements in performance are also achieved via optimised grinding kinematics; for example, as the centre of the C axis is located in the middle of the swivel centre of the B axis, the machine’s CNC axes require less interpolation.

Magnetically pre-tensioned hydrostatic guideways, a Granitan machine base and direct drives in all axes ensure accuracy and process integrity.

Torque drives in the rotary axes and linear direct drives in the X and Y axes eliminate wear and thus improve precision.

Targeted at traditional indexable insert processors working with batches of 100 to 10,000-off, the Ewag Line is supplied as standard with an automatic integrated handling system (six-axis robot) for quick loading times of less than four seconds.
