A Matsuura representative suggested implementing cutting tools from ITC after Atlantic Precision needed to improve the potential of its Matsuura five-axis machining centre.

Producing complex aerospace components, Atlantic Precision conducts a considerable amount of rough machining work, which proved a laborious process with its previous tooling supplier.

Therefore, ITC introduced the Hanita Varimill to a series of components that required heavy roughing work.

‘We were using rippers that were incapable of machining at the speeds and feeds that our Matsuura could achieve,’ said Colin Druett, Atlantic Precision’s senior programmer.

‘This meant we were not reaching the full potential of the machine and a Matsuura representative recommended ITC cutters.

‘At the time, we were machining a complex aerospace component that required significant roughing work.

‘With long processing times and a steady order for 100 parts per month, it proved problematic.

‘However, the Hanita cutter immediately cut cycle times by 50 per cent.

‘The job was hardly turning our business a profit but the new cutter turned the job into a profitable exercise,’ he added.

The Yateley-based company wanted to machine six parts per cutter, which was more than the previous tool.

The Hanita Varimill machined more than 20 of the aerospace grade alloy components.

The solid-carbide Varimill cutter is said to have increased tool life and productivity by more than 50 per cent.

The Varimill is suited to machining stainless steel, titanium, inconel and additional high-temperature alloys that are difficult to machine; this suited Atlantic as its range of materials encompasses the capabilities of the Varimill as well as carbon fibres, phenolic, nylon and many more.

The business also discovered the Varimill could also be used for finish machining operations.

Atlantic Precision’s production manager, Steve Fuller, said: ‘As the Varimill could also be used for finish machining, it allowed us to use fewer cutters in our machine tools, reducing set-up times.

‘It improved our surface finishes, which can be a critical element,’ he added.

The Varimill cutter has also been introduced to additional machines and components.

As an aerospace, F1 and medical subcontractor, Atlantic Precision processes a significant amount of aluminium and aluminium alloys.

To this end, ITC has introduced its 2041 Cyber Series of two-flute end mills.

The cutters achieved productivity gains and tool life improvements beyond 20 per cent.

ITC’s representative later replaced the 2041 Series at Atlantic with the recently launched Hanita 5103 Series.

The three-flute solid-carbide cutter with a 45deg helix improved tool life a further 20 per cent while delivering reduced cycle times.
