Kawasaki Robotics has introduced Cubic-S, an intelligent robot safety system that is designed to provide operators with less restrictive and safer access to robot systems.

The motion monitoring safety unit uses dual central processing units (CPUs) that are independent from the robot’s control CPU to monitor speed and position. Eight individual functions allow safety zones to be easily programmed without the need for zone limit switches, which can be difficult to adjust and maintain.

Cubic-S’s monitoring functions, used with external hardware such as pressure mats or light guards, allow human-machine interfaces to be established. This could allow human intervention for inspection of a component while remaining gripped by the robot still under power.

Cubic-S has been awarded TüV certification to EN ISO 13848-1 performance level D/category 3.
