Krohne has developed the Altosonic V12 – an ultrasonic gas flowmeter for custody transfer applications.

The Altosonic V12 has 12 measurement chords, two of which are dedicated solely to diagnostic functions, so once commissioned, the meter continuously checks the operating status.

The positioning of the chords in five horizontal parallel planes compensates for swirl and therefore provides reliable measurement even with distorted flow profiles.

The diagnostics in the Altosonic V12 assess deposits, contamination or changes in wall roughness so that maintenance can be scheduled according to the needs of the user.

During the research and development phase of the Altosonic V12, Krohne said it found that there were two main areas of concern that customers were finding could not be satisfactorily addressed by ultrasonic flowmeters currently on the market.

First, the issue of how to transfer the calibration curve obtained under ideal conditions in the high-pressure test rig to the real-life measuring station with its headers, strainers and bent pipes had to be addressed.

Hundreds of flow profiles in all kinds of applications were analysed as part of the product development, the result of which is that the Altosonic V12 fully complies with the installation requirements of ISO17089 and AGA9 standards.

Second, Krohne found that end users were becoming increasingly concerned about the accuracy of the meter after a certain period of operation and the effect this ultimately had on costs and billing.

Therefore, the next challenge was to address the self monitoring of the flowmeter during operation.

By applying the reflecting technique, the Altosonic V12 is able to detect changes in the flow profile and changes in the cross sectional area.

The Altosonic V12 is available in sizes DN 100 – DN 600, with a maximum operating pressure of 150 bar.

It is also compatible with common protocols and can be integrated into any existing infrastructure.
