Laser Components can now supply single- or multi-mode in-line or receptacle hermetic feedthroughs for high-vacuum and ultra-high-vacuum applications. This is in addition to standard and Atex versions of hermetic feedthroughs, which are specifically designed for explosive environments according to European norm NFEN 60079.

Most of the company’s hermetic feedthroughs include an integral rod that ensures the continuity of the fibre, resulting in low insertion loss and maintaining hermeticity when the fibres are disconnected.

In some cases, however, where optical loss is critical, the standard feedthroughs cannot be used because of the attenuation created by the two connectors. Laser Components recommends using a feedthrough without fibre discontinuity, where the hermeticity is obtained directly on the fibre itself.

According to the level of hermeticity required, different sealing technologies will be used. For hermeticity in the range of 10-2, the sealing is made directly on the fibre acrylate or tefzel buffer. For hermeticity going from 10-2 to 10-9, the sealing is made directly on the silica of the fibre cladding or possibly on the polyimide.
