CEDRAT has signed a licence agreement with CD‐adapco. The agreement provides a licence of CD‐adapco’s file formats to CEDRAT and will enable stronger coupling between Flux, CEDRAT’s electromagnetics code, and STAR‐CCM, CD‐adapco’s flow and thermal simulation code.

According to Vincent Marché, CEDRAT’s marketing manager, this coupling will provide a solution to R&D team needs, enabling engineers to obtain the most accurate computations, allowing them to increase efficiency and lifetime thanks to a reduction in heat losses. High temperatures can reduce power and torque, destroy insulators and demagnetise magnets — this should also help to answer the general device size reduction, to make products cheaper and more compact.

This initiative is intended to build on the existing methods of file-based data transfer that exist today between the two codes. The development should improve iterative computations between the two codes. It connects large data exchanges from the electromagnetic losses computations in the Flux environment — which motor parts behaviour are temperature dependant — to the temperature distribution in the STAR‐CCM environment.

The solution will be presented at the next Flux Conference in October and will be available in version 12 of Flux at the end of November 2014.
